Eating a handful of nuts everyday may reduce significantly the risk of early death, according to a research from the University of Maastricht, BBC announced.
The study lasted 10 years. According to the results, 10 g of nuts a day reduces the risk of premature death with 23%.
More than 120 000 Dutch people between the age of 55 and 69 took part in the study. In those who consumed nuts every day, the risk of mortality due to cancer, diabetes, respiratory and neurodegenerative disorders was lower compared to the other participants.
The risk of neurodegenerative disorders is the most reduced – with 45%, followed by respiratory diseases – 39% and diabetes – 30%.
Nuts are essential as they contain different vitamins, fibers, anti-oxidants and others bioactive components.
